How to registrar your horse with the ApHC UK Ltd
Your Registration Queries Answered
At the AGM on the 25 November 2007 a proposal was accepted by the meeting to improve the integrity of our B register. See clause 11 of the AGM Minutes circulated with this newsletter. This will mean that with effect from 1 January 2009 the mare of any offspring to be registered must themselves be registered with the ApHC UK for the offspring to be eligible for registration.
For your information the following are our current registration rules. However there has been some confusion with regard to the different registers and we have answered some of the more common queries in a Q and A format.
Our current registration rules which apply until 31 December 2008 are:-
Section A – American
Only those Appaloosas holding a valid APHC USA registration certificate will be eligible for registration in the APHC UK “A” register. A copy of the USA certificate must be sent to the registrar with passport application and appropriate fees.
Section B – British
British registered appaloosa horses will be entered into section B of the register provided they meet the registration criteria below:-
Horses that are eligible for ApHC USA registration may also be entered into section B (provided they meet the registration criteria for the B register). Upon receipt of a copy of their ApHC USA Certificate they will automatically be moved to section A of the register.
For your horse to be eligible for the B register one parent must be registered with the ApHC UK (or registered with the British Appaloosa Society (BAPS) before 1st February 2000). The other parent must be either registered with the ApHC UK (or registered with the British Appaloosa Society (BAPS) before 1st February 2000) or must be registered on the main register of an Approved Breed Registry. The “Approved Breed Registries” are the American Quarter Horse Association, The Jockey Club or Weatherby's Thoroughbred register and the Arab Horse Society. For the purposes of the B register the ApHC USA is the mother breed and therefore is also an Approved Breed Registry. However for any horse sired by an Appaloosa stallion to be eligible for registration on the B register the sire must be a licensed ApHC UK Appaloosa stallion unless the stallion is resident outside the UK.
If you are applying for registration for a horse that was registered with the British Appaloosa Society (BAPS) before 1st February 2000 or the dam of the horse to be registered was registered with BAPS before 1st February 2000 (and is not also registered with the ApHC UK) you are required to provide a copy of the dam's passport (all relevant pages including the silhouette) and the sire must hold a current stallion licence with the ApHC UK. However it is not necessary for you to register the dam with the ApHC UK in order to register the offspring.
(*** Please note that, as stated at the beginning of this article, this rule will change with effect from 1.1.09 in accordance with the AGM Meeting held on the 25.11.07. After the 1.1.09 the dam must also be registered with the ApHC UK.)
Section P - Part-bred
For your horse to be eligible for the P register one parent must be registered Appaloosa (A or B register) and the other parent may be of any other origin.
Non-Characteristic Horses
Solid coloured horses who meet the breeding criteria will be eligible for the main register and will be given a Non-Characteristic prefix, shown as "N" eg A/N/0001. Solid coloured horses that clearly show mottled skin and one other characteristic will be issued with regular, main register registrations, in either Section A or B as appropriate.
Breeding unknown (hardship clause Rule 216 APHC USA).
If your horse displays characteristics of the breed eg spotted or other Appaloosa characteristics eg mottled skin, but their breeding is unknown you may be eligible to register the horse. Under the Hardship Clause, the ApHC USA accepts geldings and spayed mares which do not meet pedigree requirements or are of unknown pedigree if they otherwise meet the requirements for Regular registration and are not ineligible for registration e.g. have no Pinto, Paint, draught or vanner breeding. (see APHC USA rule 205 horses not eligible for registration ). A mature Appaloosa (5 years and under) must stand not less than 14 hands unshod. The ApHC UK will accept these horses provided they have first applied for and received a registration certificate from the ApHC USA.
Questions and Answers – Current Registration Queries
Query 1: Can I put my horse on the A register if it is eligible for American registration but I have not yet applied for an American certificate?
Answer: No. The only horses that can be registered on the ApHC UK A register are those who already hold an American certificate.
Query 2: If I can not put my horse on the A register because I haven’t applied for an American certificate then can it automatically go on the B register?
Answer: No. Only if the horse meets the specific registration criteria for the B register can it be registered on the B register.
Query 3: I have used AI from an American registered stallion that is not resident in the UK and therefore does not hold an ApHC UK stallion licence on my British ApHC UK registered mare who is not herself eligible for the A register. The foal does not meet the registration criteria for the A register. Is it eligible for the B register the same as the dam?
Proposal: Yes it is eligible to go on the B register because for the purposes of the B register the ApHC is considered an approved breed register and we accept offspring where the sire is an American ApHC registered stallion provided the stallion is not resident in the UK. If the stallion is resident in the UK then it would have to hold an ApHC UK Stallion Licence in line with our normal rules.
Query 4: I have a foal out of my ApHC UK registered mare by a thoroughbred stallion. Is the foal eligible for the B register even though the thoroughbred stallion is not licensed with the ApHC UK?
Answer: Yes provided the sire is registered in the main register of the Jockey Club or Weatherby’s then the foal can be registered on the B register. The ApHC UK only licences appaloosa stallions who are registered with the ApHC UK. (The same answer would apply to Arab and Quarter horse stallions).
Query 5: I have bought a horse that was registered with BAPS before 1 February 2000 and it holds a BAPS passport (it is not registered with America). However its sire is dead so can not be licensed with the ApHC UK. I want to register it with the ApHC UK on the B register as it is a British appaloosa. Can I register it?
Answer: Yes, we accept horses registered with BAPS up to the 1 February 2000 when the ApHC UK was formed. Prior to that date the only register held in the UK was with BAPS so horses born before that date couldn’t have been registered anywhere else (unless of course they were eligible for registration with America). Therefore horses registered with BAPS before 1 February 2000 do not have to be sired by a stallion licensed with the ApHC UK and we overstamp their BAPS passport.
If you require any assistance with regard to registration and application for passports please do not hesitate to contact our Registrar, Penny Connah after 7.00pm on 01244 819281 or 07766075558 any time.
