Robert Oliver judges at the Appaloosa Horse Club UK 2002 National Show

The third national show was held at Rodbaston College, Penkridge, Staffordshire on the 10 th and 11 th August, the show was very well attended this year with over 60 horses forward from all over the UK.  The high attendance was in no small part due to the prestigious judges, Dick Gahimer our USA (APHC judge) and Robert Oliver our UK judge.  The combination of diverse classes provided something for everyone.  The show was sponsored by Numerica, a national business services group of entrepreneurial advisers. Numerica director Alan Thompson attended the show and presented some of the rosettes and prizes. 

The American halter classes and the English in-hand classes were held during the day on the Saturday and provided a range of different types of excellent quality Appaloosas both American and English.  Dick Gahimer commented on the quality of the horses and the improvements he observed in the UK Appaloosas presented since his last visit to the UK some five years ago, an improvement that he has noticed across Europe generally. Robert Oliver was impressed with the manners and presentation of the horses and the tremendous enthusiasm and friendship shown throughout the whole show.  The ApHC UK members were excited and encouraged by the comments and feedback given throughout the show and were especially grateful for the time spent with the youth members. The friendly and supportive approach helped to create an informal and enjoyable atmosphere, something the ApHC UK is keen to maintain. 

The Saturday evening gala was enormously entertaining with some very interesting musical rides for the dressage to music competition.  This class was introduced last year with one member taking part.  The performance was so memorable that it inspired eight other people to have a go this year.  All of the competitors were in costumes ranging from western themes to a runaway bride, a St Trinian schoolgirl and a raincoat theme.  The newly introduced dressage classes were also very well attended indicating that the English disciplines are as popular as the Western classes.  The gala evening closed with a hilarious hobbyhorse competition and a barbeque for members and spectators.

The performance classes were held on the Sunday and included show jumping, equitation, riding horse and riding club horse.  The western classes in the afternoon included western pleasure, open pleasure, preliminary reining and open trail.  These classes were well attended and popular with spectators who were treated to a wonderful display of western riding skills and a variety of truly stunning western costumes. 

The full show results are listed with this article.  The in-hand supreme show champion was won by Constant White Magic, a four year old few spot mare owned by Tim and Jeannette Keeley who decided to bring her at the last minute to replace their gelding Grand Canyon who, unfortunately, went down with colic just before the show and is thankfully making a good recovery following his operation.  This was a truly remarkable achievement as she was attending her first ever show.

2002 Show Report by Sally Chamberlain (show organiser)

Having just spent two glorious weeks in America in temperatures of 105 degrees, including two days at the National Appaloosa Show, Oklahoma City, it was a bit of a let down getting back to wet UK on the closing date of our show (10 th July) to find a pile of envelopes. Still within a couple of days everything sorted (well nearly!), cheques banked and show programme taking shape.  However, late entries were still coming in and nearer the time we were getting more withdrawals due to horse associated illnesses than I could cope with. 

Never mind, the weekend dawned. We set of on Friday and broke down 5 minutes from the venue making a spectacular entrance being towed in with the "big truck with the big flashing lights" (as the TV advert goes).  Horses decamped, breakdown truck removed and we were going nowhere at all. Fuel lift pump knackered! 

The show itself proved to a great success with double the entries from last year. A total of 66 horses entered, including three on the day and 8 youth members competing in open and Youth classes - well done to you all.  The gala evening proved to go on a bit longer than planned and some rescheduling is required here - especially putting the dressage on before the freestyle to music - but we learn by our mistakes and it will not happen next year. I am still trying to figure out what the "hobby horse" was all about and the costumes on some just had to be seen to be believed.  John & Joan Sillitoe got my vote for the best /naughtiest. however I am still trying to fathom how you can get a cracked rib falling from a hobby horse - perhaps this event should come with a health warning.  I hope our intrepid member (who shall remain nameless) is making a speedy recovery. The freestyle to music was a huge success and what started out last year with only one entry (Jan Rae) this year was fantastic and the costumes were brilliant if, in some cases, just a little bit skimpy.  This meant however the famous "Mutimer" BBQ was on very late and I think we were all just too tired to really benefit from it.  Better scheduling next year.

Both the in hand and ridden classes were well attended.    It was great to see that the ridden classes, both English and Western, were very well supported. The organisers will also endeavour to get the very best judges (who judge the horse and not the number of spots), one from the UK and one from America. This year we were privileged to have Mr Robert Oliver (UK) and Mr Dick Gahimer (USA) - both thoroughly enjoyed their weekend and would be happy to judge for the APHC UK again.
