Native American Heritage Costume
By Janette Keeley
This ceremonial outfit dates back to the era of Chief Joseph.
She wears an authentic Nez Perce hand beaded, brain tanned dress dated 1900. Around her waist she wears an authentic belt from the Columbian River area, attached to the belt is a beaded purse containing personal items. Her leggings are dated 1890, they are decorated with small cut beads some of the finest work by the Nez Perce. Her cuffs are dated 1890's a fine example of Nez Perce beadwork.
She is wrapped in a Chief Joseph design Pendleton blanket. Her saddle drape is authentic 1880's. The cloth used is from the Judson Bay Company traded from England where it was produced to use in trade with the American Indians! She carries an elk horn quirt traditionally decorated with brass tacks. On her saddle she carries a beaded purse from the 1930's it also comes from the Columbian River area where the Nez Perce went to fish.
Her tapederos are dated 1950's by the Denver art museum. The single feather that she wears signifies that she is married. She rides her mate's best war pony, an honour. A pony colourful in heart. Her pony wears an early form of breast collar dated 1890 most likely Nez Perce bead work. The forehead piece is made in traditional style by Gaylen Brncheau a Nez Perce Native American.
She would like to finish her presentation with a thank you to Doug Marsh from the Nez Perce tribe who helped put this ceremonial outfit together.
