2009 National Show Report by Show Manager Kim Sands
The ApHC UK National Show took place on Saturday 8th August and Sunday 9th August at our usual venue at Warwickshire College, Moreton Morrell. It was good to see so many familiar faces (and some new ones too) supporting the national show in these difficult economic times. We were lucky enough to have 64 horses forward this year which is a great achievement in the current climate. We were also extremely fortunate that people were so generous with their sponsorship. We normally try and find one major sponsor for the show if we can however we knew this year would be a real challenge so we decided to focus on smaller more affordable sponsorship arrangements. As a result we attracted quite a lot of class sponsorships, individual donations, prize money (and prizes) and a new trophy. The ApHC of America kindly paid for the travel arrangements for our American judge which helped enormously with the overall costs of the show. I was astounded at people’s generosity and we can not thank you enough as it all helps to make the show financial viable.
I would like to thank our judges; Ruth Ann Berney (USA judge) and Peter Gunn (UK judge) who did a fantastic job for us helping to make the show so enjoyable. I am pleased to say that the changes we introduced this year paid off and we were able to save some time on the Saturday by running two rings for part of the day. We managed to avoid any major class clashes and will look to do more of this next year. The re-organisation of classes and the additional classes all proved successful in particular the new youth classes. Once again we had a good turn out from our youth members with a wide selection of classes laid on for them. I would also like to say a big thank you to youth member Olivia Plumb who stepped into the breach and helped me sort out rosettes on the Saturday morning. We were joined in the afternoon by another youth member (Amy Browne) and with the two of them in control I was almost redundant!
It is normally our youth members who look forward to the fancy dress class and this year was no exception other than they were joined by a number of our adult members and I have to say the effort made by all was inspiring as well as absolutely hilarious and their efforts were much appreciated by our audience. Look out for the photos on our website and in the newsletter.
It is encouraging to see such quality horses at our show and congratulations must go to this year’s UK supreme show champion, Constant White Magic. This beautiful mare has such presence and manners and it is also really wonderful to see her in the traditional Nez Perce costumes in the Heritage class. Congratulations also to our reserve UK supreme champion Mannog Moonshadow who, on this occasion, pipped stable mate Mannog Moonriver to take the UK Stallion Championship. It was also nice to see Rachel Broom on Truly Amazing taking the UK Ridden championship this year (all that hard work paid off) and winning a number of other ridden classes. I do hope Rachel and Janice remember to return all those trophies!
It is always interesting to compare the results of the USA championships and well deserved congratulations go to Helen Smith on her double win with champion stallion Rustlers Private Bill and champion mare Rustlers Heirogance both immaculately turned out. Congratulations also to Tim Keeley on winning the USA champion gelding with the impressive Xtreme Paradise.
Last but not least I would like to say congratulations to Sandra Plumb for winning the part bred championship with Staroak Yankee Doodle which was another well deserved win.
People often say to me that our show is very friendly and encouraging which creates a nice atmosphere so people don’t mind ‘having a go’ and it was good to see people trying new classes like the In hand trail and bringing youngsters along who they have not shown before. I was particular impressed with the yearling classes and how well they behaved. I hope that you are all proud of your own achievements and look forward to seeing how you progress next year!
Thank you to everyone who has sent in messages of support following the show. There are too many to mention here but it is good to know that the efforts of the show team are appreciated.
There is a lot of work that goes into organising and running the show and we are very dependent on having help on the ground over the weekend so if anyone feels that they can help out even for half a day please do get in touch with me beforehand. The directors and club officials always have a debrief following the national show at our regular directors meetings and it is always helpful to receive feedback from our members so please do not hesitate to contact me with any of your thoughts or ideas. It is only by listening to our members that we have been able to make the improvements we have so far.
The date of the 2010 national show is Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th August 2010 at Warwickshire College, Moreton Morrell so please put this date in your diary now.
